sabbatical

i started working with my employer, kickapps, before it was kickapps — before venture funding, before real office space, before it grew to 30-ish people. that was back in december, 2005. it’s been eight months for our young company, with the usual start-up bumpiness sprinkled into the mix of things. i wear many hats there, which is a valuable, if trying, experience - developer, project manager, technical sales guy, strategy guy, product guy, support guy, and to a large degree what could best be characterized as “technical due diligence guy”.

last week, on thursday august 10th, i notified eric, the ceo of kickapps that i am going to be taking a sabbatical and then moving on without the company. it went well. we chatted for an hour or so on thursday and were both pleased to be parting amicably. i’m sure we’ll work together again, someday, under some different circumstances. by far the best part of working with kickapps was getting to know chris, pete, and steve. each of these gentlemen has the passion, skill, and experience to build a successful company. the free peanut m&ms were a pretty sweet deal, too!

my immediate next step is a lengthy retrospective to ruminate upon how the events of the past several months have shaped kickapps’ evolution. i’ll simultaneously be considering some options for what i’d like to do next. i have some tough, but very exciting, decisions to make. i’m carefully considering some meaty opportunities at the moment, but i’m also wondering if i’m ripe for developing my own portfolio of companies.

my last day at kickapps will be friday, august 18th, 2006. i will be leaving new york city in mid-september.
